Question by want it bad: Do two blade helicopters make more noise than 5 blade helicopters?
I saw a UH-60 land on a school field and it didn't seem to make much noise. I didn't hear it descend, the next thing I know people have their cell phone cameras out and are staring. I remember hearing UH-1N's from miles away as well as those little jet rangers the cops and the tv stations use. Anyone know why? 1-4 word answers will be given low ratings.

Generally yes, 2 blade helicopters "throb" more than 4 or 5 bladed choppers. The prop noise comes most from how the shock waves of the prob blades interact with other static and moving parts. We have a strange helicopter around here which they use to fight fires with. It has 2 contrarotating props on top and no tail rotor. You can hear its throb for miles. The chinook too has a particular throb signature and the front and rear blades interact.

One Response to “Do two blade helicopters make more noise than 5 blade helicopters?”

  1. Generally speaking a 2 bladed rotor has longer blades and needs to create more lift per blade than the four or five bladed kind. Each of these factors can contribute to the noise produced. Longer blades move faster at the tip which creates a heavier shock wave, and the need to generate more lift per blade means that more thrust is needed which makes each pulse of thrust louder. The Russian Mil 26 heavy lift helicopter has 8 blades, but I bet it is still LOUD
